How I work

My life roles as a partner, parent, step-parent, and teacher have provided me with a rich array of experiences from which I draw insight and understanding. My professional training and years as a therapist, teacher and counselor have given me the experience and framework to help you. The methods I use include cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational work, family systems, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). I’ll even add in reading and homework assignments if this seems helpful. Emphasis is placed on teaching effective communication skills and assertiveness training.
Trained in art therapy and sand tray therapy, I often use these creative methods and experiential work to access deeper issues and emotional blocks. The sandplay work is based on the Jungian theory of symbolism and the unconscious and follows the approach of Dora Kalff. It is used for both adults and children. The use of fabric, collage, pastels and clay provides access to different levels of our being. Using our hands and eyes, sometimes without speech, offers a very different perspective and opportunity for change.
